As music therapists, compassionate care is at the heart of the work you do. Palliative care can be delivered by generalists anywhere in the healthcare system. When supporting people with serious illness and their families you are providing a palliative approach to care when you communicate and plan with clients and families, provide interventions to support symptom management, provide emotional and social support, offer strategies to cope with fear and foster hope, or facilitate access to ritual. This presentation aims to empower and equip music therapists with the knowledge, tools and competency-based education needed to deliver excellent palliative care. This presentation also highlights communication skills for challenging topics such as disease progression, hope, and advanced care planning.
